In response to Dan’s post, DUCHAMP!!
Marcel Duchamp (July 1887-October 1968) below, playing chess. Duchamp was a French artists, grew up in a house with other artists (his siblings and grandmother), went to school mainly for intellectual growth but he wasn’t the brightest student. He did go to art school, but his attendance wasn’t that great. He sold cartoons with his humor, using puns and playing with the images visually. He worked in a lot of mediums, painting, drawing, printing, typography, sculpture….
One of his most famous works where he “challenged conventional thought about artistic processes and art marketing, not so much by writing, but through subversive actions such as dubbing a urinal “art” and naming it Fountain.
His works of art helped develop and influence Western art.
Here’s this pretty cool website http://www.understandingduchamp.com/, it kind of goes through a time line of his life.
This website only has some of his work but give a pretty good background about the pieces. http://www.centrepompidou.fr/education/ressources/ENS-duchamp_en/ENS-duchamp_en.html
