Under the microscope, I found that snowflakes were miracles of beauty; and it seemed a shame that this beauty should not be seen and appreciated by others.
–Snowflake Bentley, who captured his first snow flake image on January 15, 1885, on his family farm near Jericho, Vermont. It was the first of more than 5000″photomicrographs” he made during his lifetime.
There’s quite a pile of “miracles of beauty” in DC today. For more on the alike-ness of snowflakes, mixed with a little zen-physics, check out Caltech Physics Prof Kenneth G. Libbrecht (whose current research is Advanced Detector Development for the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, natch) and his musings on the topic HERE.
